### hardware-scavanger-hunt
as the previous chapter explained, the purpose of this chapter is:
> a "list" of various bits of hardware and components for you to try to find, either for sale or just pictures online, or in (or on) devices you may own.
this isnt an assignment, its for information and fun (if you are into computers) and you can use as much or as little of this list as you want. if nothing else it can give you ideas of the sorts of things to look for. this comprises things that are usable and common today, as well as things that are ancient, rare or no longer standing. do with it what you will:
### connections:
1. a giant data cable from the 1940s/1950s, sometimes dubbed "the usb cable of the 1950s" but that wont help you find it
2. a usb 2 (or 3) to usb-c adapter (or usb 2 or 3 hub that connects to a usb-c port)
3. a ps2 connector (on anything- adapter, keyboard, mouse)
4. an xt/at/"5-pin din" keyboard connector (male or female)
5. an rs-232 serial port connector
6. a parallel (lpt) db25 to cn36 ("centronics") cable- these are old printer cables before usb
7. a db15 vga cable or db15 to db9 vga cable/adapter
8. an rj45 ethernet connector (on or off cable)
9. an rj11 telephone connector (on or off cable, with 2 or 4 connections)
10. a dvi cable, adapter or connector
### computers:
1. the mark i
2. the eniac, preferably with grace hopper seated in front of part of it
3. an ibm pc (or pcjr, a very different machine from around the same time)
4. an apple ][e or apple lisa
5. an ibm ps/2 (a computer specifically designed to be incompatible with other computers)
6. a dec pdp-7
7. an apple newton or apple pippin
8. a zx spectrum, atari st or tandy trs-80
9. an swtpc 6800
10. a commodore 64 AND bbc micro
### peripherals
1. a modem WITH an acoustic coupler
2. an asr-33 teletype
3. an infrared wireless pcjr keyboard or other infrared wireless keyboard
4. a light pen
5. a chorded keyboard
6. the first computer mouse
7. a monochrome screen with white or amber text
8. a nixie tube display
9. a colour dot-matrix printer
10. a bus mouse and expansion card
### storage
1. an mfm hard drive
2. an 8-inch floppy drive
3. core memory
4. program stored on paper tape
5. dec pdp-11 disc pack
6. ibm 729 magnetic tape drive
7. 3091 proliant scsi drive tower
8. ls-120 superdisk
9. a cdrom caddy
10. m-disc optical media
### on-board features
1. sata connector
2. parallel ata (ide) header
3. cpu socket
4. pentium ii cpu
5. intel core 2 duo
6. zilog z80 processor
7. akhetonics optical xpu
8. cardbus adapter
9. isa bus
10. 3-pin fan header
the last subsection of this "chapter" in particular, may seem far from comprehensive or having any purpose, compared to what 10 items someone else might have included.
just the same, i think if you try to find these (i dont think the akhetonics xpu exists yet) you will become more familiar with computer boards in the process. and that is the idea.
for the most part though, all these neat technologies are variations on similar and repeating themes. which is what the next chapter is about:

=> https://portal.mozz.us/gemini/fsrhelp.envs.net/
(it wouldve been cooler to do it this way instead)
